PUBLIC GARDENS FOR ENJOYMENT AND LEARNING
Between Beatrice and Lincoln we have a wealth garden and arboretum
areas where flowering plants and trees are identified. Plan time in
your travels for the enjoyment and learning available without the gas
cost to race off across the country.
CHAUTAUQUA PARK - Wide variety of labeled trees and shrubs. Along the
South Bank of the Big Blue River East of Hwy 77
BEATRICE PUBLIC LIBRARY - Small collection of labeled trees and
shrubs. Located at 16th and East Court St.
HOMESTEAD NATIONAL MONUMENT - Good collection of native grasses and
forbs. Located 4 miles west of Beatrice on Hwy 4.
BEATRICE STATE DEVELOPMENTAL CENTER - Wonderful collection of labeled
trees and shrubs and numerous landscape perennial and annual beds.
Located at 3000 Lincoln Street.
JEFFERSON COUNTY COURTHOUSE - Moderate collection of labeled trees and
shrubs. On the square in downtown Fairbury.
CRYSTAL SPRINGS PARK - This park has a good variety of labeled trees
and shrubs amid several small lakes, picnic areas and campgrounds.
Located just southwest of Fairbury on the Little Blue River bottoms.
NORMA LOHSE - Private garden located in West Beatrice. Tremendous
variety of landscape flowers and groundcovers. By appointment only.
BETTY ANN & STAN HAYS, Wymore - Private garden. Significant
collection of flowers, landscape plants and shrubs in a rural setting.
Located one mile west of the Hwy 77 and Hwy 112 junction South of
Beatrice. By Appointment only.
LINCOLN CHILDREN'S ZOO - Home to animals from around the world, the
zoo also features a wide variety of flowers and trees. Location: 1222
S. 27th St., http://www.lincolnzoo.org
SUNKEN GARDENS - Landscaped with more than 50,000 flowering plants,
reflecting pool and waterfall. Location: S. 27th and Capitol Parkway
PIONEERS PARK NATURE CENTER - 360 acre park features two interpretive
facilities, more than 6 miles of hiking trails, animal exhibits,
native plants, herb garden and gift shop. Location: 3201 S.
Coddington, 441-7895.
STATE FAIR PARK - Herb garden, perennial flower gardens Location. 1800
State Fair Park Dr. (gardens near N. 17th Street entrance)
UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA, CITY CAMPUS - Andrews & Burnett Garden,
Cather Garden, Donaldson Garden, Love Garden, Sheldon Garden.
Location: Bounded by 9th & 21st Streets and Burlington Northern
Railroad tracks & Q Street
UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA, EAST CAMPUS - Fleming Slope, Magdeline Pfister
Iris Garden, Maxwell Arboretum, Old Mall Garden, The Porch & Old
Rose Garden, Yeutter Garden Location: Bounded by 33rd & 48th
Streets and Holdrege & Leighton Avenue.
